Merello - Volta
Greenwood Cemetery
Brooklyn, New York
A woman cast in bronze clings to the steps that lead up to the Merello Volta monument, prompting stories that the grave’s inhabitant was a bride who had been killed in a mob hit while walking to her wedding. No matter how intriguing, this is simply urban legend. The real story is nonetheless just as violent. The woman memorialized here in the 1930s was a privileged New Jersey girl killed by one of her family’s servants as a part of a dispute.
