New Orleans, LA in the Garden District

Founded in 1833, Lafayette #1 sits in the heart of the beautiful Garden District.  It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972.   This is the burial place for over 800 Yellow Fever victims during the mid-1800s.

These photos were taken in March of 2001, long before Katrina. It is my understanding the Garden District was not hit as hard as other areas in the city due to its elevation.

The New Orleans style cemetery is a challenge to photograph in. The light is too bright, the tombs and stones are crammed together, the mausoleums are merely a foot or two from the ugly asphalt laneways.  With these challenges, I did not get many good pictures. I ve learned a great deal since I took these, so I look forward to going back and trying again.
