Opened in 1871, this professionally designed cemetery has a remarkably modern feel to it. Victorian sensibility for romantic monuments is largely absent, although there are a few pieces of beautiful statuary. Buried here are Gene Tierney, the film actress of such films as The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and Laura, as well as the legendary eccentric Howard Hughes Jr., an aviator, industrialist, film producer/director and, in his time, one of the wealthiest men in the world.
